Dear Year 1 parents,
I hope you have had a pleasant half term break and have enjoyed the nice weather we have finally received!
In DT, this half term, Year 1 will be looking at making their own salads using fruit and vegetables. Following this, they will evaluate these and talk about their likes and dislikes.
For them to fully take part in the lessons, it would be wonderful if they were able to taste the different fruits and vegetables.
Would you be able to fill in the electronic form below, either agreeing to your child tasting the food or disagreeing?
Also, if your child has any specific allergies that you are worried about, please do not hesitate to let me know. We do have that information, but if you are worried, please get in touch.
Thank you and I look forward to an excellent final term with the current Year 1!

Year 1 had a great time making their cars in DT this afternoon. They used their imagination and created lots of different types of cars. Next week we will look at how we can make our cars better and purposeful.

In year 1 we have been looking at the story Tiddalik the frog. It is an Australian traditional tale and is set in the Dreamland. We have been working on sequencing the story. We then role played the story with each child being a character. The children enjoyed playing different characters which helped them remember the important parts of the story.
Here is a video on Part Part Whole. It will show you how to use a Part Part Whole effectively to make sure you are understanding the mathematics that you are doing:

Year 1 have been learning about the artist Andy Goldsworthy. They have been looking at the different materials that he uses to create pieces of art or sculptures. They understand that Goldsworthy sees beauty in nature and uses it to create meaningful pieces of art.
They went out in the playground and used leaves, stones and twigs to show their own interpretation of Goldsworthy's art.

Year 1 have created a beautiful final piece using autumn leaves to show all that they have learnt this half term on Andy Goldsworthy. Look at them at work:

Monday 14th September - Message from Miss Michelet:
Dear Parents,
I hope you have had a good weekend and have been enjoying the weather. We had a great first week in Year 1 with the children working hard and getting used to the routines of the classroom. I was very pleased and look forward to a wonderful year together.
In Year 1, there is a class bear which the children take it in turns to take home and write different adventures or activities that they do with the class bear. It is lovely as all the children love taking the teddy home and sharing their home life with the class.
It is slightly more complicated this year due to the current situation. I am proposing to have the teddy in the classroom but only I will be allowed to hold him until I choose a child to take it home. This would usually be on a Friday, then the child would keep him for 2 weeks and once he is returned, I would take him home and put the teddy in the wash to ensure that there is no transmission. Therefore, only the child who was chosen to have the teddy that week would touch him.
There would then be no risk of different children touching the teddy as I would be the only one in contact until the following child takes him. Also, the period of 2 weeks allows you to keep him isolated until you deem it safe to do activities with the teddy.
I hope this is a good solution and that you are all happy and on board with this as it is a really lovely aspect of Year 1. If anyone feels uncomfortable, please send an email, or ring the office and they will let me know and we can find a solution for your child.
Also, our topic for history this half term is toys, the children usually bring their favourite toy in to show and compare with old toys. This is not possible due to the situation, but if you could send a picture of your child with their favourite toy, that would be helpful as we could still discuss the features of modern toys. You can either email a picture or upload it onto the BGFL.
Thank you for your co-operation and understanding,
Miss Michelet

Good Morning Year 1,
I just wanted to write a note for those children who will be staying home over the next couple of weeks. As I will be in school with the children in Year 1 who choose to come in, I will have less time to upload activities for you to do at home. Therefore if you do choose to stay at home, here are some suggestions where you can find resources to keep working on those key skills. https://www.thenational.academy/ - this is a great website with online lessons for you to follow, you can choose which week to do and then watch one video a day. It has English, maths and different topics. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/ - we have been following this at home, therefore I know you are familiar with it. A great resource and this is what we will be doing in school as well, therefore it will be great to keep your maths skills up. https://www.ncetm.org.uk/resources/54454?utm_source=NCETM%20Newsletters&utm_campaign=dc62ee1bbc-ncetm-newsletter-april-2020&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_13f8d631f4-dc62ee1bbc-221580073#KS1Multiplication - this is another great resource for some maths videos to teach you some key skills. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo7fbLgY2oA_cFCIg9GdxtQ- here are some daily phonics videos which are really helpful. https://www.talk4writing.com/home-school-units/- some talk for write activities which are really good to engage with. Check the St Martin de Porres website where there are lots of ideas for activities and different ways of learning at home. Keep reading lots of books and talking about the stories. I hope to see you all really soon. Miss Michelet. |

During your Easter Holidays, make sure you get plenty of rest and enjoy playing outside as the weather is improving! Carry on reading lots of books and writing me lots of stories. Use all of those links that I have shared with you to keep those brains working hard.
Mrs Banks has shared a folder that will include a daily challenge to complete throughout the holidays. They will include cooking, craft and a scavenger hunt! We will be back online in 2 weeks to see any fabulous work you might have done over the holidays.
I have missed you all over the past two weeks and I hope that we will all be back in our lovely classroom to share all of that we have done in the past couple of weeks. As we wait for that to happen, make sure you are sharing pictures of different activities you are doing at home so that the rest of the class can see these!
Here are a few ideas of activities which you could do with your family:
Most of all, enjoy being together and keep smiling! We will make it through this strange time and all be back together soon.
Have a great Easter break!
Love,
Miss Michelet

- Look at old family photographs- talk about the changes over time, how you have changed, your family members etc...
- Draw a family tree- How does each member link together?
- Have a family picnic- Can you child make sure there is enough plates, forks, knives, cups, serviettes for everyone? Can they make sure to share the food out evenly?
- Put on a show or a performance- Perform a story or a song to your family.
- Play a family board game together- talk about taking turns, this will help with their number recognition and their number bonds if they use a dice.
Most of all, enjoy being together and keep smiling! We will make it through this strange time and all be back together soon.

Year 1 have had lots of fun acting out their story about a girl going on an adventure on a bubble. Here are some pictures of their freeze frame of each part of the story:

On Wednesday 26th February, Year 1 children did some gardening with Mrs Braithwaite.

In English, Year 1 have been exploring different fairy tales. They have specifically focused on Goldilocks and the Three Bears. They know the story extremely well and they had a chance to role play it to their fellow classmates. The children enjoyed each of their roles and were fantastic actors and audiences.

Year 1 have enjoyed learning about the famous painter Lowry. They have explored his different styles within his paintings and have had a chance to make their own portraits. They loved using paint for the background and then adding the people in with black pen.

To prepare for Jesus’ Birthday, Year One have been making baby Jesus. They enjoyed learning the story of the Nativity and understanding the real importance of Christmas. They used lollipop sticks and wool to make their own baby Jesus to bring and celebrate Bambinelli Sunday.

In Year 1 we had a fantastic day celebrating Roald Dahl on Friday 13th September. Some of us wore costumes of Roald Dahl's characters while others wore something yellow, Roald Dahl's favourite colour. We were looking at Fantastic Mr Fox and made our own foxes using cardboard plates. We really enjoyed reading this story.

On Tuesday 8th July, Year 1 led Mass for the first time. Well done, children!
And many thanks to the parents who attended.

On Wednesday 26th June, Year 1 children went to the Think Tank for their end-of-year class trip.

On Tuesday 9th April, Year 1 participated in a Multi-skills Festival organised by Bishop Challoner Catholic College at Billesley Tennis Centre.

In Year One we have been very excited to start learning Gymnastics. We have been exploring how to balance using different parts of our bodies. Then, we worked together to mirror each other's movements.

Over the months of November and December, Year 1 and Year 2 had a series of special Multi-skills PE lessons coached by Mr Steadman from Inspire Sports.
The last session, on Monday 17th December, focused on Personal Challenges. Children had to work together to:
Many Thanks goes to Mr Steadman from Inspire Sports who came in to coach and teach them these lifelong skills.

Request from Miss Ganley for any Guided Reading books to be returned. We are missing several of the books that have been sent home since September. Please check your shelves and under the children’s beds! Thank you.

Request from Miss Ganley for any unwanted tights/trousers/jogging bottoms please. It is always useful to have a supply of spare clothes, particularly in Reception and while the playground can be wet and muddy!

On Thursday 8th November in the morning, most of our parents joined their children in the hall for a workshop with Miss Ganley and Mrs Ahmed.
Thank you all very much for coming.
