swimming

Picture
Year 4 children went swimming for two weeks Monday 29th April to Friday 10th May.
Year 5 children are going swimming for two weeks straight after Year 4, just before the half-term break, starting on Monday 13th May.

Year 3 children will go swimming for two weeks in July, starting on Monday 1st July.

Following the sudden closure of Tiverton Road Swimming Baths late last year, we have managed to secure bookings at Cocks Moor Woods Leisure Centre. This means Years 3, 4 & 5 are all going swimming there in the Summer term.

During the two weeks of intensive swimming course, children MUST bring their swimming kit (costume/trunks and a towel) into school EVERYDAY. Please ensure the swimming kit is in a clearly named bag each day for the 2 week period. Children with long hair will also need a swimming hat.

Swimming forms part of the National Curriculum so it is compulsory to participate in and it also teaches children vital life skills.
The lessons take place each afternoon and children are back in school ready to be collected at 3.30pm.

For the 2017-2018 academic year, there is a new condition requiring schools to publish how many pupils within their year 6 cohort are meeting the national curriculum requirement to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.  This condition has been added in response to recommendations from the Swim Group, who reviewed curriculum swimming and water safety in primary schools.

Click here to have an overview of how last year's Year 6 performed at the end of their Swimming course.
