Messages from our Headteacher

Friday 7th January 2022 - Message from Mrs Braithwaite and Mrs Laird:
Dear Parents and Carers,

We hope you had a lovely Christmas holiday and wish you all a very happy New Year. On behalf of all the staff, we would like to thank you for all the many cards and gifts that we received during the Christmas period. We are most touched by your kind words and generosity. May the coming year be a good one for us all, filled with the peace and joy that Christ brings.

Unfortunately, the term did not start as expected with the heating system breaking down. Thankfully, we were able to secure the necessary part relatively quickly and we have warmth again. Thank you for your patience and understanding and bearing with us.
There has been no change to national COVID-19 guidance for primary schools over the Christmas period. It is recommended that visitors wear a face covering when inside the school building. A reminder that children should not attend school if they have COVID-19 symptoms: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/symptoms/coronavirus-in-children/
The challenges of staff isolating due to COVID-19 have been widely reported over recent days and weeks; St Martin de Porres is not immune from staff shortages. We will always try our very best to minimise the disruption of staff absence to the education of our pupils.
Please be assured that there will be no whole school gatherings for the foreseeable time. We are closely following Government guidance in order to keep all children and staff as safe as possible whilst in school.

We are pleased to be able to offer a new after school activity this half term. Tag Rugby will be available for Year 5 and 6 after school on Tuesday. The activity will be led by coaches from Moseley Rugby Club. This week we have had Jack Richards from Moseley Rugby Club delivering taster sessions for both of these classes. If your child is interested please know that you can book via sQuid, more details are at the end of the school newsletter.

Please can we remind you that children are expected to be wearing the correct, full school uniform. If your chid is coming to school in their PE kit please remember they need to wear a white t-shirt, black leggings, shorts or joggers, their school jumper and pumps or trainers. They can wear a hoodie or sweatshirt as an extra if they are going outside for their PE lesson while the weather is cold.
It came to our attention this week that some Reception class parents are waiting outside the school gates from 8:40am. Please know that if you have a child in Key stage 1 or 2 they can also come in to school at 8:55 am. They don’t have to be dropped off at 8:40am.
We thank you for your continued support in keeping our children, staff and whole school community safe.

Best wishes,

Mrs Braithwaite and Mrs Laird

Thursday 2nd September- Message from Mrs Braithwaite and Mrs Laird:
Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope you and your families are safe and well and have had a lovely summer break. We are very much looking forward to opening the gates on Monday morning and welcoming the children back for a new academic year. We would also like to take this opportunity to welcome all our new families to St Martin’s School community.
Following the Government's most recent guidelines we will endeavour to return to ‘normal’ school life as soon as we are able to.

Please note some of the updates below:
  • The Government advises that we go back to previous opening times. As a school, we would like to continue with a fluid opening for Years 1 to 6 and will therefore open the gates at 8:40am. There will be a member of staff to meet and greet the children on the gate as they come in. The children will go straight to their classroom. Reception class children will be greeted at their gate by their class teacher at 8:55am.
  • We will return to our previous end of day time of 3:15pm for all classes. Each class will be collected from their own gate. We are aware that this will mean that some families will need to collect from different gates. Gates will be numbered so you will know where to collect from. Please remember to inform the office before the end of day if your child/ren are being picked up by another family member/friend known to your child.
Gate 1 (Forest Road) - Year 3
Gate 2 (Forest Road) - Year 4
Gate 3 (Corner of Oakland Road & Forest Road) – Year 1
Gate 4 (Oakland Road) - Reception
Gate 5 (Main entrance) - Year 2
Gate 6 (Car Park) – Year 5 and Year 6
  • We expect children to return in full school uniform, with their water bottle, book bag and any inhalers or medication. Can we just remind you to label each item and especially jumpers and cardigans. We are going to continue with classes attending school in PE kits on the day they have their PE/Games lesson. Again, we are expecting full school PE kit.
  •  We are holding ‘Parents Welcome Meetings’ within the first fortnight of the term. This is to give you an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and talk about the expectations for the year ahead. Study plans will be shared with you during this meeting.
Reception – individual meetings as arranged with class teachers
Year 1 – Thursday 16th September - 3.30pm
Year 2 – Friday 17th September - 3.30pm
Year 3 – Monday 13th September - 3.30pm
Year 4 – Friday 10th September - 3.30pm
Year 5 – Thursday 9th September - 3.30pm
Year 6 – Tuesday 14th September - 3.30pm

We would also like to remind anyone who has to drive to school, the importance of safety for all. We ask that you make use of the car park on Church Road belonging to Moseley All Services Club and then walk those couple of minutes to school.
We look forward to seeing you all again on Monday. Please do not hesitate to speak to us if you need to, we are here for you.

Many thanks and God Bless,

Mrs Laird and Mrs Braithwaite
