• French is the official language of France and it’s also spoken in Monaco, Luxembourg, some parts of Belgium and Switzerland, in the Canadian province of Québec, parts of North and Central Africa, Vietnam, Cambodia, Madagascar and the French Overseas Departments and Territories. It can still be heard in some communities of French origin in the USA (in Maine & Louisiana).
• French is a descendant of the Italic spoken Latin language of the Roman Empire, as are languages such as Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Romanian, Lombard, Catalan, Sicilian & Sardinian
• There are an estimated 220 million French speakers worldwide
• French is the 2nd most widely spoken foreign language (19%) after English (41%) and ahead of German (10%) and Spanish (7%) in the European Union
• Kinshasa is the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is the world’s second largest French speaking city, after Paris & before Montreal and Brussels
